BUTT'S PULL FERRY
We also operate the "Oldest Pull Ferry" in the country! Butt's Ferry provides a daily service (11am - 5pm Easter till Oct) and weekends (river conditions permitting) throughout the year. The pull ferry has been operating on the Quay since at least 1641!
Butt's Ferry has changed a lot since then (now built with aluminum enabling a 25 passenger capacity) but the principles of its propulsion remains as it were 370 years ago. A simple rope/wire stretching the width of the river with the ferryman pulling the boat across using nothing but a strong pair of arms and an iron grip. See here for further history.
